Reverse osmosis is a process for removing dissolved mineral salt , organic molecules , microorganism and other impurities from water by forcing water under increased pressure to pass through a semi permeable membrane . This process is the reverse of the natural osmotic process in which fluids with a low concentration of dissolved solids pass through a membrane into an area of higher concentration with reverse osmosis. Water made to pass from a state of high concentration to a state of low concentration.

Designing

The Water Treatment plant is a configuration of standard units. Here is a guide for selection of units for various cases :

Following points need to be considered for selection of a scheme:

• Quality of inlet water
• Quality of outlet water desired
• Design the process
• Selection of equipments
• Quality of treated water

Various impurities present in water to be studied and undesirable impurities to be identified. Suitable schemes can be selected such that all the undesirable impurities are removed from water.

Some time two or more schemes / units may be able to attain the required treated water quality. In such cases the quantity of water to be treated i.e. the size of the plant plays a major role. In case of smaller capacity plants it is advisable to opt for lesser number of units. In case of fairly large capacity plants inclusion of elaborate number of units can be justified.
